About us
A Mwanza driving school built on patience and standards
Nyota means star. We named the school after what we want every student to leave with — the confidence to find their own way, safely, on any road in Tanzania.
How we started
Nyota Driving School opened in 2015 with one instructor, one training car and a classroom borrowed three afternoons a week. Our founder, Joseph Mwakalinga, had spent fifteen years driving cargo across the Lake Zone and had watched too many new drivers sent onto the road with a licence but no judgement.
A decade later we train private car owners, daladala and coach crews, and heavy goods drivers from a permanent site at Mkuyuni, opposite the market in Nyamagana. Over three thousand drivers have passed through the classroom.
What has not changed is the standard. Every instructor here teaches the way Joseph taught his first student: slowly, in the student's own language, and never signing anyone off for a test they are not ready to pass.
What we stand for
- Safety before speed
- We would rather a student takes an extra week than leaves unprepared. Repeat lessons are free.
- Honest pricing
- One training fee, published on the website. Government test fees are separate and we tell you the amounts up front.
- Everyone is welcome
- Female instructors are available on request, lessons run in Kiswahili or English, and no question is too basic to ask.
- We finish the job
- Our registrar tracks your TRA booking and your licence right through to the day you collect it.
In their words
What our students say
“I had never touched a steering wheel before. Neema was patient with me for six weeks and I passed the TRA test on my first attempt. Now I drive myself to work every morning.”
“The truck training was serious work. They made me do a pre-trip inspection every single lesson until it became a habit. My employer noticed the difference immediately.”
“Good price and the office handled all my TRA paperwork. The night driving lessons were the part that helped me most on the Mwanza routes.”
“I work until three every day, so I took the evening sessions. The instructors never rushed me and never made me feel slow. Worth every shilling.”
